Mw 6.9 Fiji Region

On 28 May 2016 a strong earthquake occurred in the Fiji Region at a depth of 399 km. The seismic event occurred at 05:38:49 UTC and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 6.9.

Two planetary alignments on the 25th preceded the earthquake, most notably Venus-Mercury-Saturn and to a lesser degree Venus-Earth-Mars. Both alignments were followed by a high lunar peak indicating critical lunar geometry from the 25th to the 26th. The earthquake was followed by a major earthquake a few hours later in the South Sandwich Islands region.
