Mw 7.2 South Sandwich Islands Region

On 28 May 2016 a major earthquake occurred in the South Sandwich Islands Region at a depth of 70 km. The seismic event occurred at 09:46:58 UTC and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 7.2.

Two planetary alignments on the 25th preceded the earthquake, most notably Venus-Mercury-Saturn and to a lesser degree Venus-Earth-Mars. Both alignments were followed by a high lunar peak indicating critical lunar geometry from the 25th to the 26th. The earthquake was preceded by a strong earthquake a few hours earlier in the Fiji region.
