M 7.0 Eastern New Guinea Region

On 17 July 2020 a major earthquake occurred in Eastern New Guinea. The tremor occurred at 02:50 UTC and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) of 7.0.

The earthquake occurred about three days after critical planetary geometry occurred in the solar system which was estimated to potentially trigger larger seismic activity, possibly reaching magnitude 7.
