Mw 6.9 South Shetland Islands

updated 24 May 2021

On 23 January 2021 a strong earthquake occurred at the South Shetland Islands. The seismic event occurred at 23:36:50 UTC and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 6.9.

In January 2021 lunar geometry was very high (SSGI 20), which in combination with critical planetary geometry tends to increase seismic activity. On the 20th Earth aligned with Mars and Uranus, which already triggered a Mw 7.0 earthquake in the Philipine Islands Region (see report below). On the 22nd Uranus also aligned with Mercury and the Sun.
