Mw 6.7 West Chile Rise

updated 24 May 2021

On 3 February 2021 a strong earthquake occurred at the West Chile Rise. The seismic event occurred at 05:23:44 UTC and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 6.7.

A convergence of two planetary alignments occurred on 2 February while lunar geometry was high (SSGI 16). While the Mercury-Sun-Venus alignment typically results in seismic activity just over magnitude 6.0 and the Mars-Jupiter-Saturn alignment was considered less critical, a warning was not issued. Two alignments on 29 January likely also contributed to this seismic increase as it occurred within 5 days.
