Mw 7.4 Southern Qinghai, China

updated 27 May 2021 UTC

On 21 May 2021 a major earthquake occurred in Qinghai, China. The seismic event occurred at 18:04:14 UTC and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 7.4.

The occurrence of this seismic event and two strong earthquakes on the same day, along with the strong seismic event on the 19th (see report below) was not anticipated due to a lack of understanding of the underlying planetary geometry involved. Comparison to previous unsatisfiable cases, most notably the Mw 8.1 and Mw 9.3 earthquakes in December 2004 and the Mw 8.6 earthquake in March 2005 led to the development of the WPG (Wide Planetary Geometry) algorithm, that was added to the SSGI PG/LG model in the end of May 2021.
