Mw 7.1 South Sandwich Islands Region

On 22 August 2021 a major earthquake occurred at the South Sandwich Islands Region at a depth of 10 km. The seismic event occurred at 21:33:20 UTC and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 7.1. It is the third major aftershock following the major earthquakes on 12 August and the second on the 22nd.

While aftershock activity, two planetary alignments preceded the major aftershocks on the 22nd, most notably Earth-Mercury-Mars on the 19th, which is known to precede major earthquakes from time to time. Two lunar peaks on the 21st and 22nd followed on the critical planetary geometry. Increased seismic activity was anticipated at or just after these lunar peaks. See also the Telegram posts below.
