Mw 6.1 Kuril Islands
updated 22 September 2021

On 20 September 2021 a strong earthquake occurred at the Kuril Islands at a depth of 10 km. The seismic event occurred at 20:25:23 UTC and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 6.1.

Stronger seismic activity, potentially higher 6 magnitude, was anticipated to occur at the lunar peak on 20-21 September due to critical planetary and lunar geometry preceding that peak.
