Mw 6.0 South Sandwich Islands Region
updated 28 December 2021

On 16 December 2021 a strong earthquake occurred in the South Sandwich Islands Region at a depth of 20 km. The seismic event occurred at 21:14:46 UTC and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 6.0.

Due to the absense of critical planetary geometry, especially alignments between inner and outer planets, there is great certainty that the strong earthquakes during the second half of December 2021 were triggered by lunar geometry, with both Mars-Jupiter and Saturn-Uranus making critical angles. Four days later, a second strong earthquake occurred in the same region.
