Mw 6.0 Prince Edward Islands Region

On 18 December 2021 a strong earthquake occurred in the Prince Edward Islands Region at a depth of 20 km. The seismic event occurred at 20:05:46 UTC and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 6.0.

The earthquake occurred after the Moon made critical geometry with Mars and Jupiter later on the 16th and early 17th. The Moon-Mars alignment also adds to the probability of seismic activity approaching magnitude 6.
