Mw 6.1 Fiji Region
updated 28 December 2021

On 26 December 2021 a strong earthquake occurred below Fiji at a depth of 628 km. The seismic event occurred at 15:42:56 UTC and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 6.1.

The earthquake was triggered by critical lunar geometry involving Saturn and Uranus, which were a significant contributor of the low 6 magnitude earthquakes that occurred above average in previous weeks. Mars-Jupiter were also a contributing factor, but at this point in time, Mars had moved closer to Jupiter making the small time-window of critical lunar geometry with both planets wider.
