On 29 December 2021 a major earthquake occurred in Kepulauan Barat Daya, Indonesia at a depth of 170 km. The seismic event occurred at 18:25:52 UTC and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 7.3.

Major seismic activity was anticipated as early as 29 December due to a convergence of planetary alignments from 28 to 31 December with a potential peak magnitude between 8 and 9 magnitude on 1-3 January.
